It was a beautiful spring morning, and Majka and Max\u00edk were just sitting in their room waiting. They didn't even know what they were waiting for, but one could see that they were waiting for something. Max\u00edk was cleaning all his mirrors, magnifying glasses, and slides, which had gathered a little dust over the winter because he hadn't used them much - after all, what could he possibly study in winter? Majka was tuning her musical instruments and sorting her books - which ones to read now, which ones later, which ones she had already read and... and then there was a soft knock at the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you hear that?\u201d asked Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes,\u201d said Majka, looking around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomeone's knocking,\u201d said Max\u00edk, slowly approaching the door to check if he had heard correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI heard it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShould we open it?\u201d Max\u00edk looked at his sister from the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHmm... should we?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe it's Ka\u0161ko.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut he's never knocked so softly before,\u201d thought Majka, and she started biting her nails a little, even though she shouldn't.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Majka opened the door, but there was no one there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCould Mum be playing a joke?\u201d she couldn't believe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProbably not,\u201d Max\u00edk thought, and then they heard the knocking again. They turned to the window and almost fell over. Standing behind the window was their friend Ka\u0161ko, floating in mid-air. They quickly opened the window, and it was immediately clear what they had been waiting for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you sitting here for?!\u2019 Ka\u0161ko shouted, as if they had agreed long ago to meet and what they would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\u2018We're not just sitting here,\" his friends turned away from Ka\u0161ko and pretended to be busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"No?\" Ka\u0161ko smiled under his breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"No. I cleaned all my microscopes and magnifying glasses, and slides,\" said Max\u00edk, showing off his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"And I sorted through my books and tuned my instruments,\" Majka also boasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"So, if you're ready, shall we go?\" Ka\u0161ko continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Where to?\" Their eyes lit up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"It's warm outside, so let's go on a trip somewhere, shall we?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Do you have a plan?\" Max and Majka opened their eyes and ears wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"We could go to Green Point.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Is that some kind of green place?\" Max\u00edk searched his mind for such a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat sounds good,\u201d chirped Majka and began to choose a handbag to take with her for a walk in the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTake some nice warm clothes too,\u201d reminded the fluttering ghost Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat for?\u201d Max\u00edk and Majka looked up from their packing at the fluttering Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn case it gets windy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat's true,\u201d thought Majka, \u201cit's often windy in the forest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow are we going to get there?\u201d they asked, standing ready to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have time today, so we could take the bus,\u201d suggested Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhatever you say,\u201d said Max\u00edk, jumping over the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children got on the bus heading for the village of Kluknava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWill we get sick?\u201d wondered Majka when she heard where they were going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy would you get sick?\u201d asked Ka\u0161ko, not understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell... there'll probably be winding roads if it's called Kluknava.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are winding roads there, but don't worry - you'll be enchanted when you get there,\u201d promised Ka\u0161ko cheerfully, his eyes shining so brightly that if it had been night, the bus driver wouldn't have needed to turn on the headlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They got off the bus in a picturesque village in the middle of Haravara and walked a short distance - well, Max\u00edk and Majka walked, and Ka\u0161ko flew a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, what do you think?\u201d asked the flying boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWow!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In front of them stood a tower. But not a castle tower, a lookout tower. And not just any tower - a beautiful tower.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cKa\u0161ko?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes?\u201d he waited for words of praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you want to go up?\u201d Max\u00edk repeated slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course I want to!\u201d Ka\u0161ko exclaimed cheerfully and flew up and down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut...\u201d Max\u00edk wanted to say something...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGuys, I can fly, so I can see nature from up here whenever I want, but you have to look at it from above.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs you say,\u201d Max\u00edk moved forward decisively, and then something beeped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh no!\u201d Max\u00edk gasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat's going on?\u201d Ka\u0161ko looked at Max\u00edk quizzically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to take some great photos and find out more about that tower.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"I'll tell you everything.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut there's this QR code and my phone just died,\u201d said Max\u00edk, already turning to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon't worry, you can charge it here,\u201d said Ka\u0161ko, pointing to a wall in the observation tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children started laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Why are you laughing?\" Ka\u0161ko didn't understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Ka\u0161ko, we don't have mobile phones that run on light energy.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"You don't, but as you've noticed, there are solar panels on this tower.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Really?\" the children looked more closely at the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"And they generate electricity, so you can charge your phones.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCool,\u201d said Majka and started climbing up.\u013e<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet's go, let's go,\u201d encouraged Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I...\u201d Max\u00edk started again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat's wrong, Majka?\u201d asked Ka\u0161ko when he saw Majka suddenly stop in front of the steps and stand there silently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"I tried to hide it, Maji,\" Max\u00edk said, lowering his eyes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"What's going on?\" Ka\u0161ko didn't understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Majka is afraid of heights,\" Max\u00edk blurted out, and Ka\u0161ko flew down from the tower to Majka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Really?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Mhm,\" Majka nodded without saying a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo Green Point is out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou guys go ahead,\u201d Majka stepped away from the steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, we're either going together or not at all,\u201d her super brother joined in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"But I'm a little afraid of heights.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"What about flying?\" Ka\u0161ko remembered their flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"That's different,\" Majka waved her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"How is it different?\" Ka\u0161ko didn't understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"I close my eyes.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Oh... okay. But this place is really safe - but if you're scared, we could go somewhere else. Is there anything else interesting around here?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"You bet, there's a great bridge,\" Ka\u0161ko remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Oh, a bridge,\" Majka sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A bridge \u2013 but not just any bridge.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"We're all ears,\" Max\u00edk sat down next to Majka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"The longest bridge in the land of Haravara.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Come on.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Indeed.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Does it go over a river?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Indeed, it's a bridge,\" Ka\u0161ko drew bridges in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"You guys go ahead,\" Majka sat down in the grass and picked up a book to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"No way,\" Ka\u0161ko decided. \"There used to be a castle not far from Kluknava.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A castle?\" Majka's eyes lit up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Mhm, in a village called Richnava.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Richnava Castle? I've never heard of it,\" Max\u00edk searched his memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"You haven't heard of it because it's no longer there.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd where is it?\u201d Majka didn't understand again, and her eyes saddened once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey destroyed it,\u201d Ka\u0161ko said in a detached manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, well, that doesn't help us much, does it?\u201d Max\u00edk winked at Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut don't you know that they built a castle in Kluknava from the stones of this castle, and there's a secret compartment in one of those stones?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A secret compartment?\" Max\u00edk and Majka sensed adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A scarecrow,\" Ka\u0161ko said casually, and the children thought that Ka\u0161ko had changed and started calling Majka a scarecrow and laughing at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKa\u0161koooooooooooooooo?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere's a scarecrow in that box,\u201d Ka\u0161ko defended himself when he saw their looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs that some kind of medicine or something?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt's a book,\u201d Ka\u0161ko said mysteriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA book?\u201d they repeated after him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA book with different things written in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, what a surprise, a book has different things written in it, huh?\u201d Majka looked at Ka\u0161ko, wondering if he was lying to her, even though Ka\u0161ko had never lied to them before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut this one has everything written in it about the \u010c\u00e1ky and Thurzo clans...\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Who?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey were noble families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, I thought they were some of your cousins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose families owned the castles and chateaux we were talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd what was in the fear-monger?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Fear-maker,\" Ka\u0161ko corrected Majka.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo will you tell us what was in it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow to fight various fears.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet's not hang around here, let's go,\u201d said Majka, and in three seconds she was packed, had her shoes on and had finished reading the last verse of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Or, let's fly.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Or even...\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ka\u0161ko gathered his friends under his cloak, Majka closed her eyes, and before you could say \u2018o ho ho,\u2019 they were standing in front of a beautiful castle that looked like the castles they had once seen on holiday in Austria or Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt's beautiful,\u201d Majka said, still in awe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is, but now we have to find the stone,\u201d Ka\u0161ko reminded them of their mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max\u00edk and Majka admired the four towers surrounding the castle, the massive doors, the beautiful windows, and Ka\u0161ko examined the stones and pebbles above the doors and around the towers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"We have to go inside,\" Ka\u0161ko announced after searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"But this doesn't look like an old castle.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Old castles belonged to different people, so they rebuilt them over and over again.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"And?\" Ka\u0161ko's friends didn't understand what he was talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook, for example, when I was here 458 years ago, this corridor wasn't here, they probably added it only about two hundred years ago.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut they added it nicely,\" Max\u00edk and Majka nodded appreciatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Yeah, and these windows weren't here either,\" Ka\u0161ko recalled, flitting here and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere were no windows?\u201d The children were already thinking of all the scary stories about houses without windows and castles where everyone fell asleep in the dark and...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere were,\u201d Ka\u0161ko reassured them, \u201cbut they were completely different, they had decorations around them and...\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd here it is,\u201d Ka\u0161ko suddenly stopped flitting around and smiled with a smile that said, \u201cNow it begins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo how...\u201d his friends waited for Ka\u0161ko's decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you have your tuning fork with you?\u201d Ka\u0161ko suddenly asked Majka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSure, I can't go anywhere without it. What if I meet some great musician from Haravara and we want to play together and I can't tune my instrument?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Lend it to me,\" said Ka\u0161ko, tapping the stones with the tuning fork used to tune pianos and various other instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery stone has its own melody \u2013 and here you can hear a melody from 500 years ago - so this must be the original stone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd it's hollow,\u201d added Max\u00edk in an expert tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Let's do it.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ka\u0161ko closed his eyes, began to mumble and sing, and a small door opened on the stone, revealing some pieces of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Is that the book?\" Neither Max\u00edk nor Majka thought so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"I did not say it would be a book, I said it would be advice.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAdvice in a shop?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut...\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOr in front of a gallery?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery member of the Thurzo and \u010c\u00e1ky families who became a ghost has stored their advice here on how to get rid of certain fears. Wait...\" Ka\u0161ko rummaged through the old documents.\u201d Against fear of the dark, of little mice, of hairy spiders, of Aunt Iza's singing. Here it is - how to get rid of fear of heights.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell?\u201d Majka waited for Ka\u0161ko's advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe're in luck,\u201d Ka\u0161ko smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d Majka waited impatiently for some wise words from Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause everything I need is here in Kluknava.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think I need some food too...\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"We'll find that here. Look, there's a restaurant in the castle, and it's very good, but we'll come here after we cure Majka.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"How?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Let's go,\" said Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet's fly!\u201d Max\u00edk spread his arms and waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn foot,\u201d Ka\u0161ko tapped Max\u00edk on the forehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They walked a few metres along Kluknava and came across a strange place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA shoe museum,\u201d read Max\u00edk, beginning to doubt that Ka\u0161ko could hear him properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKa\u0161ko?\u201d asked Majka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"What's this?\" Majka pointed to the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"This is where you can heal yourself,\" Ka\u0161ko said calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max\u00edk and Majka rolled their eyes a little and went inside. In the shoe museum, they found shoes from famous people. There were shoes from Matej T\u00f3th, Peter Sagan, Miro \u0160atan, Mi\u0161ko Hud\u00e1k...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWow, good,\u201d Ka\u0161ko acknowledged that he had chosen a good place for a trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d Ka\u0161ko asked Majka, who had stopped in front of some shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShoes from the actress Kamila Mag\u00e1lov\u00e1,\u201d Majka said dreamily, because she loved her aunt Magda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"She's a great actress,\" agreed Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"I like how she tells fairy tales and also...\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Here they are,\" Ka\u0161ko interrupted her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"And what are these clogs?\" Max\u00edk remembered a strange word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"They're not clogs, they're shoes that our great-great-great-great-grandparents wore here in Haravara,\" Ka\u0161ko explained to the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, and they're supposed to heal me?\u201d Majka whispered incredulously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you know that there was once an ice age here too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Kluknava too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes,\u201d confirmed Ka\u0161ko, placing the so-called clogs on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat about it?\u201d the children didn't understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"There were mammoth hunters here, and sometimes when they hunted mammoths, they got all the way up on the mammoth's back. And that was pretty high.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Well, sometimes almost three metres.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI couldn't do that,\u201d said Majka, shaking her head and sitting down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that's why a Haravara shaman named \u0160a\u0148o...\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u0160a\u0148o?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat's the name we gave him, because people didn't have names in the Ice Age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"So, he cast a spell on these shoes \u2013 when a hunter put them on and climbed a high hill or walked over something high up.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Like a mammoth,\" added Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Can I guess?\" Majka joined in, having probably figured out what was going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Go ahead,\" said Ka\u0161ko, sitting down for a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"He wasn't afraid anymore,\" Majka tried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Exactly,\" confirmed Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet's borrow them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They waited for the lunch break when the museum closed, Ka\u0161ko rushed inside and borrowed the magic shoes for a moment. Majka put them on and they headed towards the Kluknava Bridge. It was really beautiful. It smelled of wood \u2013 coniferous wood \u2013 as if it were still Christmas, and a river flowed beneath them as they approached some strange buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCopper used to be mined and processed here,\u201d Ka\u0161ko pointed to the small factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo this is where the copper mountain from the fairy tale was?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I'll tell you, it was a copper hill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max\u00edk and Ka\u0161ko looked at the old smelters and old buildings around them, and when they turned around, they saw Majka standing in the middle of the bridge, smiling, holding the magical shoes in her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"I don't need them anymore,\" she chirped cheerfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"As always,\" Ka\u0161ko patted himself on the shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max\u00edk coughed and everyone laughed heartily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max\u00edk and Majka set off towards Green Point to look at the beautiful nature around them, and Ka\u0161ko flew back to return the magical shoes. And Majka fell asleep that night with a strange, beautiful smile on her face, because she had managed, with the help of her friends, to overcome her fear even without the magic shoes.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
