It was a beautiful April day, though you wouldn\u2019t have guessed it from the way Majka and\nMax\u00edk were walking. They were practically running down the Main Street in Ko\u0161ice, the\ncapital of Haravara. Ka\u0161ko, their ghost friend, hadn\u2019t shown up for several days, which meant\nhe was sick or something had happened\u2014and that something could be anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat if he hit his head on the bell at Elizabeth\u2019s?!\u201d Majka even thought of this in her desperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI told him several times not to just fly around there,\u201d Majka continued, getting upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOr maybe he was flying around somewhere in that ghost world of theirs and ran into a wizard,\u201d Max\u00edk continued with his terrifying scenarios, \u201cand maybe that wizard turned him into a bar of soap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOr into a goose, but probably not\u2014he wouldn\u2019t turn him into an animal,\u201d Majka mused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While they were imagining these super-scary scenarios, they made their way to the tower\nwhere Ka\u0161ko lived. They climbed all the way up and saw it there. Ka\u0161ko was rummaging\nthrough books; about 157 books were lying on the floor, and there were papers and scribbled\npieces of stone everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKa\u0161ko,\u201d Majka said quietly, not wanting to disturb him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKa\u0161ko,\u201d Max\u00edk also began quietly when he saw Ka\u0161ko darting from book to book, then flying out the window, coming back inside, and then banging his head against the tower wall and shouting, \u201cRecall, recall, Ka\u0161koooooooo!!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKa\u0161ko!\u201d Majka raised her voice a little, but Ka\u0161ko didn\u2019t even notice them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt might still be there!\u201d Ka\u0161ko shouted and flew toward Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stopped in front of him and, instead of saying hello, began examining his backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be mad, guys, but today\u2014and probably the next few days too\u2014I won\u2019t have time,\u201d Ka\u0161ko kept darting from place to place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe can see you don\u2019t have enough time,\u201d Majka surveyed the mess once more, \u201cbut we haven\u2019t seen you in a few days and we don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s over for me,\u201d Ka\u0161ko sat down on the window of the big tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut what happened?\u201d Max\u00edk walked over to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat could have happened! I lost it,\u201d Ka\u0161ko stated dryly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut what did you lose?\u201d Majka came closer and began stroking his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI lost the ice cream recipe,\u201d Ka\u0161ko blurted out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor what?\u201d they both shouted at once, and Majka stopped stroking him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor our ghostly ice cream,\u201d Ka\u0161ko looked at them blankly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou have your own ice cream?!\u201d Max\u00edk imagined it in his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOf course, we don\u2019t have just any kind, but a cherry one,\u201d Ka\u0161ko smacked his lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy cherry?\u201d Majka asked, trying to remember what they\u2019d learned about cherries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou probably don\u2019t know this,\u201d Ka\u0161ko explained, looking through the books again, \u201cbut we, ghosts, only like a few things. I don\u2019t know why that is, but it\u2019s been that way for thousands of years, and one thing we love is cherries and everything related to cherries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOh, and you don\u2019t know why that is?\u201d Max\u00edk smirked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t, but that\u2019s exactly why there are so many of us right here in Haravara,\u201d Ka\u0161ko continued, taking four more books from the shelf and flipping through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause we have the best cherries in Haravara?\u201d Majka asked, trying to understand Ka\u0161ko\u2019s words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t know that?\u201d Ka\u0161ko looked at them over the open book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat should we know?\u201d the children looked at him curiously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a small village with huge cherry orchards, and there used to be as many as 120 varieties of cherries growing there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c120 varieties?\u201d Max\u00edk and Majka couldn\u2019t believe it and imagined what 120 varieties of cherries might taste like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd that\u2019s not all. These cherries are blooming right now, in April,\u201d Ka\u0161ko explained nervously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWow, let\u2019s go there!\u201d Majka shouted with joy, imagining those beautiful cherry blossoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe could, but we can\u2019t,\u201d Ka\u0161ko replied strangely, though he\u2019d still be running back and forth all day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cExplain!\u201d they stopped Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe ghosts take turns,\u201d Ka\u0161ko began slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat do you take turns with?\u201d they wouldn\u2019t let Ka\u0161ko go back to the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEvery year, one of us has to make cherry ice cream for the whole year and store it, and most importantly, it has to be made according to an old recipe, because that\u2019s the only kind we ghosts can eat,\u201d Ka\u0161ko whined again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut you still have time; the cherries don\u2019t grow until sometime\u2026\u201d Majka tried to cheer him up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYeah, yeah, yeah, but we, ghosts, make our ice cream not from cherries, but from cherry\nblossoms,\u201d Ka\u0161ko whispered the big secret to his friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd that\u2019s right now,\u201d Max\u00edk realised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn a few days, the blossoms will slowly fall to the ground like snow, and I have to catch them all, gather them, and make ice cream,\u201d Ka\u0161ko began fluttering about again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThen let\u2019s go catch the petals\u2014we\u2019ll have winter in spring,\u201d Majka joked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut I lost my note on where to find that recipe,\u201d Ka\u0161ko began whining strangely again, \u201cmy friend Gerhard sent it to me\u2014he made ice cream a year ago\u2014and I pinned it somewhere or filed it away or\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKa\u0161ko?\u201d Majka asked timidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNot now, Maji,\u201d Ka\u0161ko growled nervously and picked up the book he\u2019d already held in his hands about a hundred times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere\u2019s a spiderweb above your bed, up there on the ceiling, and I\u2019m afraid of spiders,\u201d Majka whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d Ka\u0161ko replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut there really is something there,\u201d Max\u00edk confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGood heavens, Saint Am\u00e1lka, that\u2019s it!\u201d Ka\u0161ko shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat?\u201d Majka looked fearfully at the spiderweb, thinking Ka\u0161ko had seen a spider there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s that note from Gerhard. Call up Hahuha and get the grinder from him, then choose a coin for the\nferryman in the treasure vault. It looked beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKa\u0161kooo!!\u201d Majka called out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYes?\u201d Ka\u0161ko replied cheerfully, but didn\u2019t stop flitting around the trees so quickly that the petals fell to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI have always thought,\u201d Majka continued, \u201cthat the wind blows into the trees and knocks the petals down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt does in some, but not in cherry trees,\u201d Ka\u0161ko practically sang, and flew so fast past one cherry tree that half the blossoms fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo?\u201d Majka didn\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Max\u00edk stopped in surprise and stopped collecting the petals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, because even the breezes love the colour of cherry blossoms,\u201d Ka\u0161ko revealed the ghosts\u2019 secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo, you\u2019re the ones blowing on those petals?\u201d Max\u00edk scratched his forehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd right now, it\u2019s me,\u201d Ka\u0161ko laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo, when we look at the cherry trees in our garden and the petals seem to fall to the ground faster there\u2026\u201d Majka pondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c...Then you have a ghost there,\u201d Ka\u0161ko exclaimed as he flew past another tree, \u201cbut you should be able to see it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s great, how many ghosts we\u2019ve had close to us,\u201d Max\u00edk and Majka grumbled a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd now, friends, let\u2019s get to work!\u201d Ka\u0161ko flew around the trees, the petals flew like snow, and the three of them were collecting them. In the early evening, they headed to Domica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHave you been to Domica yet?\u201d Ka\u0161ko asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNot yet,\u201d Max\u00edk and Majka admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s a shame, because it\u2019s the largest cave in the Slovak Karst, but most importantly, people and ghosts have been living here for 56,000 years,\u201d Ka\u0161ko murmured casually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat?!\u201d Majka nearly dropped all her potato chips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd the oldest ghost of Haravara\u2014Hahuha\u2014lives here too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat\u2019s tickling your throat?\u201d Majka looked seriously at Ka\u0161ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNothing, why are you asking?\u201d Ka\u0161ko began to check his throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, because you coughed so hard, that ha hu ha,\u201d Max\u00edk repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat ghost is called Hahuha,\u201d Ka\u0161ko explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd why does he have such a funny name?\u201d Max\u00edk laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBecause when he moved here about 30,000 years ago, neither the ghosts nor the people\nknew any words yet, so they just called each other \u2018ha hu ha,\u2019\u201d Ka\u0161ko said as they\napproached the secret entrance to the cave, known only to the ghosts\u2014and now to Max\u00edk\nand Majka as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHahuha!!!\u201d Max\u00edk shouted at Majka to scare her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGuys, we have to be a little quiet now; we\u2019re going underground. First, we have to find our pink stalactites, then the treasure chamber, and then our Hahuha,\u201d Ka\u0161ko reassured Max\u00edk and Majka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLet\u2019s go, then,\u201d Max\u00edk said decisively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWon\u2019t we be cold down there?\u201d Majka asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, it\u2019s short-sleeve weather down there; the temperature stays at 10\u201311 degrees all year round,\u201d Ka\u0161ko smiled, watching to see if his friends would get a little scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, but you can\u2019t have ice cream there\u2014it would melt,\u201d Majka mused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut we\u2019re just looking for a recipe for now,\u201d Ka\u0161ko explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cRight,\u201d Max\u00edk and Majka tapped their foreheads and started paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They walked through a beautiful cave full of stalactites, recesses, and chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHere it is,\u201d Ka\u0161ko pointed and was already running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat is it?\u201d Majka looked at the beautiful stalactites in disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese are pink stalactites,\u201d Ka\u0161ko explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBeautiful,\u201d added Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut we\u2019re looking for our pink stalactites,\u201d Ka\u0161ko looked around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDo you have your own stalactites?\u201d Majka asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEveryone admires these pink stalactites here, and they formed because water passes through red clay, which turns the stalactites pink,\u201d Ka\u0161ko gazed at the stalactites too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, and yours?\u201d Majka wouldn\u2019t let it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd ours,\u201d Ka\u0161ko whispered, \u201care stalactites that are also pink, but not from the\nclay\u2014they\u2019re from the oldest cherry ice cream in Haravara, and on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWow!,\u201d the children almost shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cShh,\u201d Ka\u0161ko hushed them, \u201cI have to take a little bit of them as a secret ingredient for our ice cream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, that\u2019s why we have to be quiet, so no one finds out, because we\u2019re not allowed to touch\nthe stalactites,\u201d Max\u00edk and Majka understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cExactly,\u201d confirmed Ka\u0161ko, \u201cif you touched the stalactites that have been growing in the cave for thousands or even millions of years, you would destroy them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd if we touched yours?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou would destroy them completely, because we only touch them using magic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ka\u0161ko began to cast a spell and sing; he walked over to three pink stalactites, and suddenly\na piece of something pink broke off from them and slipped into Ka\u0161ko\u2019s pocket. Ka\u0161ko closed\nhis pocket and walked on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat are we looking for now?\u201d asked Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe\u2019re looking for a treasure chest,\u201d Ka\u0161ko looked around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd what\u2019s that?\u201d Max\u00edk wanted to know more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s a stalactite, like this, like this\u2026 ah, here it is!\u201d Ka\u0161ko shouted so loudly that an echo rang throughout the cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful,\u201d Majka stopped and couldn\u2019t take her eyes off what she was seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cStep back!\u201d Ka\u0161ko commanded and began chanting again. After a moment, he took some powder out of his pocket, threw it into the air, and suddenly something happened that the friends had only ever seen in movies about aliens. The Treasure Chest floated up, opened, and a small coin fell out of it and then returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd what is this?\u201d Majka whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s our Haravarian obolus, and we call it an ojbolo,\u201d Ka\u0161ko laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd what do we need it for?\u201d Max\u00edk examined the obolus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the journey across the River Styx,\u201d Ka\u0161ko whispered as well, turning the coin in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKa\u0161ko,\u201d Majka said fearfully, \u201cbut the Styx is the river of the dead in ancient Greek legends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut they just took our name from the Haravara River,\u201d Ka\u0161ko explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDo we have a Styx too?\u201d Majka was speechless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a moment they were by the river, and on it was a small boat just like on the River Styx in Greek myths. Ka\u0161ko gave the coin to a sort of little ghost on the boat, who didn\u2019t say a word, and they continued on the boat. Suddenly, a strange ghost appeared on the bank, sitting and muttering to himself. Ka\u0161ko began to mumble as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKa\u0161ko, who is that?\u201d Max\u00edk asked quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s the oldest ghost of Haravara, the one I was telling you about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThen why aren\u2019t we going to see him?\u201d the friends asked, confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo one can reach him; he only advises us or reveals the greatest secrets of the ghostly or even human mysteries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Majka and Max\u00edk knew they were encountering something extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWow, just like in the myths of the ancient Greeks,\u201d Majka whispered excitedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have to go to the Silick\u00e1 Ice Cave, and there we\u2019ll find the recipe,\u201d Ka\u0161ko said. As he spoke, Hahuha turned and threw something so precisely that it landed right at Max\u00edk\u2019s feet. Once it landed, he turned and left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cKa\u0161ko, what is it?\u201d Max\u00edk examined the little object at his feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d said Ka\u0161ko, unwrapping the package, \u201cnow it\u2019s clear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat\u2019s clear?\u201d the siblings asked curiously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese are old grinding stones,\u201d Ka\u0161ko said, picking up the round, almost white stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey used to grind things on these right here\u2014we ghosts showed these millstones to the people who lived here in Domica 5,000 years ago, and we use them to crush our flakes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ferryman brought them to the shore, waved, and moved on; Ka\u0161ko headed for the secret exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSo, we\u2019re looking for some kind of icy surface?\u201d asked Max\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, we\u2019re looking for an icehouse,\u201d Ka\u0161ko repeated, describing the place they were searching for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd what\u2019s that?\u201d Majka didn\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBack when there were no refrigerators, people used to store meat and all the things they needed to keep cold in the ground\u2014in places where it was cold\u2014and they called those places icehouses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh, so they were natural refrigerators?\u201d Majka asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWithout electricity,\u201d Ka\u0161ko recalled his childhood in his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAwesome,\u201d Ka\u0161ko\u2019s friends agreed appreciatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd there\u2019s one right nearby. Let\u2019s go!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The kids grabbed Ka\u0161ko and were already running. They stopped in front of a sort of hollow that looked like the entrance to a cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIs this it?\u201d Majka asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is it,\u201d Ka\u0161ko confirmed and was about to step inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAnd here\u2019s the recipe\u2014are you sure?\u201d Max\u00edk asked nervously, because he didn\u2019t want to go inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cRight here,\u201d Ka\u0161ko pointed to the hole in the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, let\u2019s go look,\u201d Max\u00edk commanded decisively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHahuha told me we should look on the rock,\u201d Ka\u0161ko recalled the words of the oldest ghost in Haravara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They went inside, and it really did look like a cave, but without any stalactites.
